The Austrian State Prize for Historical Studies is awarded every second year and promotes academic excellence in historical studies, Austria as a research hub, young scholars, and science/research communication.

Five prizes are awarded in four categories: one State Prize for an outstanding scientific publication (€10,000), two early-career prizes for scholars at the beginning of their academic careers (€4,000 each), and a "Innovative History" prize for innovative approaches to transferring historical knowledge to a broader audience (€2,000). All awarded works must have a focus on Austria. Additionally, a special prize for lifetime achievement may be granted.
